Question Tags are short questions which are placed at the end of statements.
Question tags:
• are formed with the auxiliary (be, do, etc.) or modal verb (can, must, etc.) of the main
sentence + a personal pronoun (I, you, he, she, etc.) in the same person as the subject.
If the sentence does not contain an auxiliary or a modal verb, we use do, does or did,
depending on the tense of the verb.
Hassan is a doctor, isn’t he?
Peter and Mark joined the gym, didn’t they?
You can swim, can’t you?
• take not when the sentence is affirmative.
John is at the gym, isn’t he?
• don’t take not when the sentence is negative.
Jim didn’t join the aerobics class, did he?
We use question tags:
• when we are not sure about something.
Karate is only for boys, isn’t it?
• when we are sure about something and we expect
the person we are speaking to to agree with what we
are saying.
You don’t like lifting weights, do you?
NOTE:
Be careful with the following question tags:
I am a very good writer, aren’t I?
Let’s go to the park, shall we?
Open that door, will you?
